Lights…Video….ACTION

Video Header

Just a quick update this week. Why? Because I am going to revisit my earlier blogs and record them on video.

Skype Call

I have just go off a Skype call with my friend Sameer. He is really making a go of this internet marketing opportunity and is someone I greatly admire.  Sameer and I have no business relationship (e.g. he does not make money off of me or visa versa), but he has been extreamly helpful to me and given me loads of good advice. but I came across his blog when I was first looking at this industry.

I came across his blog when I was first looking at this industry. I had viewed a number of blogs that were, well, to put it bluntly, pig ugly and low on content. Sameer’s blog stood out, a rare dollop of quality in a sea of mediocracy!I was impressed and contacted him via the internet. We have chatted online a number of times, and even met up in London (he commutes between the US and Germany!). He has been such an encouragement to Tanya and I and has often shared his knowledge with us.

Now before I go any further I want to point you to Sameer’s blog. You can find it here, http://isameerjoshi.com/blog.

Its one of the hallmarks of Sameer’s approach and ethos that he is so willing to share his knowledge so freely which is why  he called, he wanted to share with me an insight regarding my blog.

The Missing Ingredient

He skyped me to say he had been looking at my blog, which was excellent (of course!) but he felt it was missing an important element that would help connect with our readers.

He said it was missing video. And how right he was!

You can see on Sameer’s blog how he makes a video post of his blog post, and embeds it into the blog. Brilliant!

He told me that since he has started to do this he has had a lot of positive feedback, stuff like this:
Donna Merrill – January 6, 2017
Hi Sameer,
When I landed here I went right to your video. It is so great to get to know you because I always say that a video in a blog post is like a virtual handshake. You really made this post come alive having that in there.

As he spoke about the power of video, how it helps the reader, to see the real you and how it makes for a direct connection, I could see what he meant. My blog was indeed missing this vital element.

So this weekend, me, my blog and a video camera are gonna get up close and personal and create the video versions of my story blogs to date. Who knows, one day they may make the basis of a great feature film (if so I want Bill Murray to play me!)

The Digital Route to Retirement

Retirement page image

We are following a digital route to funding our retirement.  The plan is to retire in two years, but the trouble is our retirement pot isn’t big enough for us to enjoy sort of retirement we want. You can read about our dreams for retirement here “Building the Dream.”

[video_player type=”youtube” width=”560″ height=”315″ align=”center” margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”20″]aHR0cHM6Ly95b3V0dS5iZS8zRVpOQWxpaTdFTQ==[/video_player]

The current state of retirement

I guess we are in the same position as many of our age (50’s 60’s). We worked hard,  supported both our parents and our children, and have spent most of what we have earned.  We have only a small, modest pension.

Debt.org, on their website, quote that 51% of Americans are dangerously unprepared for the financial side of retirement. They state that in general, retirees need 80% or more of preretirement salary for each year of retirement. That’s quite sobering thought!.

In Britain, the Prudential released figures this week which that showed 25% of people retiring in Britain in 2017 would have an average of £24,300 worth of debt.

[feature_block style=”icon” overall_style=”icon” columns=”1″ icon_style=”4″ content_font_font=”Titillium Web”][feature title=”” icon=”19.png” upload_icon=”” bg_color=”#fcdbdb” href=””]

The Prudential poll, which questioned 1,000 people planning to retire in 2017, found 25% would be in debt, up from 20% in the same poll last year – and the highest level since the survey began in 2011.

It was very much within this atmosphere that Tanya and I started to look for a way to supplement our retirement income. We needed to fund the retirement lifestyle we desired. It soon became apparent to us that, if we could avoid the pitfalls so many fall foul of, then making an income online was our best bet.

The digital route

The digital economy is booming.

Tanya and I wanted to find a way earn money from our new Portuguese cottage.

It made sense that we explored this booming new economy! After some research, we decided that our digital route to retirement would be via affiliate marketing.

The digital marketing model

Eventually, we plan to be producing and selling our own digital products. We will enlist a small army of affiliate marketers. We will pay them a good commission on each sale they make and take a lower portion for ourselves. The model is simple:

For example, if we have a product that sells for $150, and the agent gets $100 commission on each sale we would receive $50 per sale. If the agent makes ten sales, they will earn $1000, we, of course, would pocket $500.

However, if we had ten agents, each making 10 sales and each making a $1000, we would be getting $5000.

The great thing is we would only have to produce the digital product once, but we can sell it many times by many agents.

Our current state

At the moment we don’t have our own products to sell. Also, we don’t want to spend a lot of time promoting other people’s products if they only earn us $5 here and $10 there. What we have done, therefore,  is to partner with a successful affiliate marketing coach and mentor. This guy has multiple products we can promote and which will earn us commissions. The commissions range from few dollars to those that earn us a cool $1000 or more per sale.

We realise that this will be a slow start. We also realise it takes time to build a sound foundation on which to build a lasting and profitable business. At the moment we are at the stage where we are trying to get our name and our brand out into the marketplace and known. As well as this blog you may be aware of our to Facebook pages, ‘Tony and Tony online,‘ and, ‘Building the Dream.

These are vehicles to present the products we are selling as affiliates (e.g. someone else’s products on which we earn a commission) and, the products that we will be offering other affiliate marketers (e.g. our own products that others will sell on our behalf).

The webinarwebinar image

We are actually in an incredibly privileged position in that we will soon be working with our mentor to create a co-branded webinar that will lead to his exceedingly good training programs. In effect, we will produce a product that will introduce people to valuable training that our mentor has created on our behalf.

Two ways to sell

Regarding digital products, there are two main ways in which you can sell and earn money from them.

The first is to sell the product for a once only fee. This is equivalent to buying a DVD in a store, where, for a one-time payment, you purchase a film to watch. You pay the 19.99 or whatever it might be, and you walk out with the product.

The second is to sell the product on a subscription basis. This is equivalent to paying for Amazon Prime on a monthly fee basis. You pay 19.99 or whatever it might be a month, and you can stream as many movies as you like.

Our route to funding our retirement is to provide a mix of the single payment and monthly subscription products.  It is the combination of these sales options,  coupled with the quality of the products we are selling,  that is going to provide us with the retirement income we are seeking.

Building the dream…literally

Dream-House

We are literally building our dream! We have made the first tangible step towards our goal of building our dream house and enjoying our dream lifestyle! This may not be monetary,  but I believe that it is a significant step towards success.  We have started to achieve a big part of the ‘Why’ we are doing this! We have a very clear goal and a very clear reason for why we are in this business.

After over 35 years of marriage, and 20+ years working as an IT consultant I’m now ready to retire. I want to spend more time with Tanya and our family. Our dream is to spend that time in a new home in Portugal. We can only achieve this if we make a success of this venture.

Belief in Action

So confident are we that we will achieve our dream, that last month we bought a ruin in Portugal. We were in Peru when our daughter called to say that the sale had gone through. At that point, we had not even seen the property she had found for us!

Our ruin sits on 6,000 m² of rural land in the Western Alentejo. It is sited on the side of the hill, with a stream at the bottom and cork trees growing on the opposite slopes. It’s about an hours drive from the airport, and 1 million miles away from the bustling corporate world I inhabit now.

The land has plenty of water, has a dozen or so fruit trees growing on it and plenty of room for some beehives and chickens. It is full of life, we have storks nesting on the grounds, lizards running over the rocks, and wild orchids growing in the meadow.

Out the back, we are building a large patio with an outdoor kitchen, which for most of the year will be our dining room. To the side, in the fold of the hill, we are planning to build a freshwater swimming pool. Inside will be three double bedrooms, a large lounge, dining area, and a kitchen with Tanya’s dream accessory, a walk in pantry!

You can see why we are so excited about this and why we are determined to make this business work for us.

The JCB is there!

JCB at our Dream HouseYesterday the JCB turned up on site and started to dig out the land at the back. The guy that understands the traditional method of building in rural Portugal showed up with sand and lime to repair the rammed earth walls. My daughter and her friends started to remove the rubble from inside the building.  Our dream home is on the way!

Building the business

Having such a powerful reason to do this business is an incredible driver for success. In many ways, the restoration of the building is a metaphor for this business. To begin with, we have to clear away the rubbish make room for the work to begin. In our business we did this by becoming Internet Profit consultants. The training and coaching they have given us has allowed us to clear away the rubbish in this industry that so many get stuck on.

We have a plan for the house that is guiding the work. Likewise in our business, we have a plan. In fact, yesterday as work began on the house, we reviewed our plan with our mentor. We are very confident we know what we have to do now. We’re fired up, ready to go.

At the beginning of this journey, we said we would be open and honest with you guys and share what we have learned. So if you are interested to see our plan, that sets out why and how we are going to achieve our dream, then you can download it here.

How to Repurpose material

Re-purpose Image

I will talk about how to repurpose material in a minute, but let me recap our journey so far. We had joined ‘Internet Profits’ as an Internet Affiliate Marketing consultants. We knew we needed this  to get the training and support we needed to make a success of this venture. We had thought about the ‘why’ we wanted to do this. We had written it down and costed it out. We had a strategy and a plan as to how we were going to achieve our goals. We were now going through the training to increase our knowledge. (I will tell you more about the training in the near future.) BUT…. we were also taking action, building our Facebook page and our blog. Today I want to break our journey story to give you some valuable training and insight into making the most of the material you create.

TipandTiltGameTo repurpose material, is to take content created for one purpose and using it for another . This is an example of extreme repurposing!

It all started with this simple meme from Tanya, something she does each week day on our FaceBook page. I am not sure what is was that really set the sparks flying in my brain, but something about the ‘tip and tilt’ maze image fired up my creative juices. (By the way, are you are interested in creating your own highly visual memes? Do you want to do it using totally free internet based resources? Then check out the Memes Creation Step by Step Guide on our YouTube Channel.)

However, I digress, this was the image that caught my eye.

Repurpose Score

Immediately I saw the opportunity to repurpose this content as a Facebook Live Broadcast,(again you can check out the video on our Facebook page).  I took Tanya’s meme and created our very first TonyandTanyaOnline  live broadcast based on the concept of Affiliate Marketing being like a tip and tilt maze game. (If you don’t use Facebook live yet, you should! I will dedicate a blog to that in the coming weeks.)

So each time I took the content and repurposed it I calculated a ‘repurpose score’ (RPS).

1 meme + 1 Live Broadcast RPS = 1

That got me thinking about what a great analogy the tip and tilt game was. The image of avoiding pitfalls whilst navigating a maze just resonated with my experience of Affiliate Marketing. I created a full on blog post entitled, ‘Avoid The Affiliate Marketing Pitfalls’, (you can read that here). The blog uses the general game principal to make points about Affiliate Marketing and offers some helpful insights.

1 meme + 1 Live Broadcast + 1 Blog RPS = 2

I then started to think about the pitfalls themselves. I decided that I could use this idea to talk about specific pitfalls that Affiliates need to avoid.  I thought series based on this would make a nice theme for a week of blog posts. So I generated five short blog articles about five common pitfalls that Affiliate Marketers can fall foul of. I will release them as a series over a week, one a day at a time, for five days, I will of course tweet each blog as well (so another re-purpose opportunity). These blogs are all written and ready to go! Top tip: Creating content that can be stored ready to use when you have a particularly busy week can really help you keep to your publishing schedule.

1 meme + 1 Live Broadcast + 1 Blog + 5 Blogs + 5 tweets RPS = 12

I am getting into the habit of making daily Facebook live broadcasts, and it makes sense to use the same five points made in the daily blogs in my daily live broadcasts the same week.

1 meme + 1 Live Broadcast + 1 Blog + 5 Blogs + 5 tweets + 5 Live broadcasts RPS = 17

Affiliate Marketing Maze Game . Affiliate MarketingBut it does not stop there. Somehow non-technical Tanya and I managed to produce some very technical children, one of whom said, “hold on Dad, I will knock you up an Android tip and tilt game to promote your five articles”. So those five articles get used again, this time as content in a game. (You can download the game for Android just search Google Play for ‘Affiliate Maze’). The game links to the five mini blogs. Again I will Tweet about this!

1 meme + 1 Live Broadcast + 1 Blog + 5 Blogs + 5 tweets + 5 Live broadcasts + 1 game + 5 Blog links + 1 tweet RPS = 24

In order to enable the mini blog articles to render quickly on a mobile, I have published them to Facebook Instant Articles, which I will publish on Facebook at the same time as the blog posts!

1 meme + 1 Live Broadcast + 1 Blog + 5 Blogs + 5 tweets + 5 Live broadcasts + 1 game + 5 Blog links + 1 tweet + 5 Instant Articles RPS = 29

And of course writing about it here means we are now at a RPS of 30!

30 individual pieces of content from that one small meme Tanya posted originally! Now that’s extreme re-purposing.
